Coinciding with International Museum Day this week, we have prepared a list with some of the most popular museums worldwide which have opened their doors virtually. Usually, on International Museum Day visitors can walk along the museums totally for free and enjoy the activities specially prepared for the appointment. In 2019, International Museum Day, attracted the participation of 55.000 museums hosting events in 150 countries.
In case you still are stuck at home, we want to bring the museums to you so you can still enjoy them. In our past blog article we talked about Google Art and Culture, a very easy-to-use tool you can travel to any place in the world with. Most of the museums in this list are included in it but, this time, we will show you the different virtual tours that main museums have prepared in their websites.
Musei Vaticani – Rome
A virtual tour through Art History. Built in 1506, the Vatican Museums receive more than 6 million visitors per year. The Sistine Chapel welcomes an average of 12.000 people per day. Skip long queues and expensive ticket entrances and be fascinated by the 360° view of The Creation of Adam or The Last Judgment by Michelangelo in just one click.

Louvre Museum – Paris
The Museum of Museums is always crowded. Even if you have already visited it, this is a good plan to take a closer and calm look at Mona Lisa, Liberty Leading the People or The Venus de Milo. Also, the museum has launched a didactic App called La Joconde en VR where some secrets around Van Gogh´s mysterious painting are revealed.
British Museum – London
The first National Museum ever built encloses thousands of Europe´s, Egypt´s and Mexico´s treasures. Its online collection allows access to almost four and a half million objects in more than two million records. The Rosetta Stone or the Elgin Marbles are a must in this virtual visit.
Metropolitan Museum – New York
One of the most beautiful museums in the world, not only because of its 2 million art pieces but because of the long period of art it covers. From the ancient world to Modernity, you can either search for your favourite piece or select one of the 360° videos in Youtube where you can visit the main galleries and spaces. If you are looking mostly for modern pieces in the USA you would better visit MoMa´s collection.
